These are the diary logs of Alfred Truax of Company E. Alfred enlisted as a Sergeant on May 2, 1861 in Schenectady, NY. He was 30 years old at the time of his enlistment. Some words in this diary are displayed as -------- because I can not read his handwriting.
 
MAY 1861
 
2  Heaving a full complement of men (77) Capt. Truax had us inspected by Capt. Bryson.
 
3  At 3 o'clock the Company fell in line and marched to the depot bound for Albany where we arrived at about 4 o'clock and went to the "Adams House". Had a "nigger show" at night. Which continued until about 2 o'clock.
 
4  Routed out of bed at 5 o'clock. Had breakfast at 9 o'clock. We had 1 pint of coffee without milk, Bread, tough meat, and potatoes.
 
5  Sunday    Went to church in city of Albany.
 
6  Monday   Nothing new
 
7  Went to "Barracks" in Lydius ---.
 
17  On this day the 18th Regiment composed of 4 companies from Albany, 2 from Schenectady, and one each from Middletown, Ogdensburgh, Canandaigua, & Kingston were mustered into service.
 
18  To-day Five passes to a company were allowed.
 
19  A Battalion drill at the ------- Parade ground.
 
25  The 3rd N.Y. Regt, Col Townsend left for Fortress Monroe. They were the finest Regiment to leave the "Albany Barracks"
 
JUNE
 
1  The 16th and 28th went into encampment just below the City and the 14th and 18th went to the "New Barracks".

    The Regular drill and other duties which we performed in the Old Barracks were adopted without change in the new Barracks. During out 17 days stay here but little occured to vary the regular routine of duty. The ladies of Schenectady proved that they still remembered us by presenting us (Co. E) with 80 Rubber Blankets. also a needle book containing about one dozen needles. a paper of pins two ----- of white and black thread. some two dozen buttons. and a stripe of paper containing in --------- -- quotation from Scripture. The old system of papes was still retained.
 
15  Today a box was received from the Ladies of Schenectady containing havelocks.
 
17  Left Albany for the Seat of War, 780 Strong.
 
18  Arrived at Jersey City.
 
19  Arrived at Washington D.C. at 10 P.M.
 
20  Went to Camp Harris. Had to sleep on the cold ground as it was to late to pitch tents.
 
21  Today we pitched out tents and called our camp - Camp Harris in honor of Senator --- Harris.
 
22  We had dress parade this evening.
 
23  At about 2 o'clock this morning we were startled by hearing the firing of four guns (the alarm of an attack) and soon after the voices of the Lt. Colonel (Young) and Sergeant Major (Holden) as they passed from street to street, crying out, "Fall out! Fall out men!! For God's sake fall out, the enemy is upon you!" The men fell out and were in line in less than four minutes. The Colonel however informed them that calling them out "was only to see how rapidly they could fall out."
 
24  Nothing more of importance occured till the 4th day of July except some dissatisfaction in relation to the men's rations. For some days we had nothing but coffee.
 
JULY
 
4  Review by Lt. Genl. Winfield Scott at Washington all of the New York Regiments were in line and some 25,000 men passed in Review before the President and Cabinet.
 
9  Left Washington D.C. for Alexandria, VA.
 
15  Frank Seymour promoted Sergeant.
 
16  Commenced our march this afternoon at 3 o'clock --------------- Va.
 
17  Left Camp near Annondale at 7 o'clock. Skirmished all the way to Fairfax Court House. Where we encamped for the night.
 
18  Left Fairfax Court House and marched to Centreville. The Company went on Picket.
 
19  Company came in off Picket and we encamped near Bull Run Battle-field.
 
20  Still in Camp.
 
21  Battle of Bull Run. We retreated from Bull Run this night at 12 o'clock.
 
22  We arrived at Camp Myers once more.
 
23  Company E on guard. At night Ensign Vedder captured a ------ boat containing three "contrabands" in "Hunlins Creek".
 
AUGUST 
 
1  Company E on guard at Camp Myers.
 
4  Private Chad Mead deserted from Camp Myers.
 
6  Capt. Truax went home on furlough for 30 days.
 
8  Moved to Camp "Misery" under Fort Dalhgreen near Alexandria.
 
Companies "E" and "D" were on guard. Ensign Vedder Officer of the guard.
 
14  Sergt. James M. Ball went home on recruiting service.

13  Private in the 1st New York Cavalry was shot for desertion and acting spy. His name was William Johnson. His death was witnessed by the whole of Franklin's Division near Fort Ward, VA.

15  Sunday. Preaching by Rev. Farr. in Bethel. the band of the 95th Penn. performed on the occasion. A bully ----- -- was too.
 
16  1st Sergt. E. Nott Schermerhorn was promoted to Sergeant-Major.

6  Giles Marlett & John Schremph left behind in Hospital. Marched to the Rail Road about 2 miles from the city of Alexandria and took the cars and rode to Manassas Junction. Had a break down near Union Mills on Bull Run Station. Slept on the cars.
 
7  Pleasant. Walked to Bristoe Station about 5 miles from Manassas Junction. Commenced to snow before we got all of our tents pitched.
 
8  -- snowed & rained all last night and Rained all day.
 
9  Snow and rain all day. Mud knee deep.
 
10  Michael Melany deserted. Cleared off a little.
 
11  Fine day. Marched about 5 miles on the R.R. track when the Orders came to turn back immediatly by and join "Little Mac" at Yorktown. We marched back to Bristoe Station and Camped.
 
12  We put our Knapsacks on the cars and marched in light marching orders to Fairfax Court House and encamped in same camp we were in in March.

27  Battle of Gaines Hill. 18th New York engaged. Loss 138. We were ordered out at 7 o'clock in the morning and crossed the Chickohominy at Smith's Bridge and formed in line of Battle but were ordered back to our camp at about 12 o'clock. at about 1 o'clock the enemy commenced shelling our camp. killing one and wounding three. At 4 o'clock we crossed ------- Bridge and went into the fight where John Bovee was wounded and taken prisoner. Dennis McKinney, John Pollard, William H. Harris & Elisha C Rust were taken prisoners out of Company "E".

29  On the march for James River. ------- Savage Station. Halted for Rest.
 
30  Started at 3 o'clock in the morning. Heavy firing in our rear. Halt for the night.
 
31  Battle of Charles City Cross Roads. 18th N.Y. covering Battery.
 
JULY
 
1  Heavy Battle of Malvern Hill. Halted for rest at City Point.
 
2  Arrived at Harrison's Landing after a 7 mile march. Rained all day mud knee deep.
 
3  Marched about one mile back from the River and encamped. Muddy. Rebels shelled us in the morning. but were driven back.
 
4  Lay in our new camp all day. McClellan visits our camp. Bands playing and salutes being fired. Another fight at Malvern Hill.
 
5  Regiment went to work on Rifle Pits near midnight.
 
6  Regiment on intrenchments.
 
7  Detail made to work day and night.
 
8  Very warm. Resting.
 
9  On Picket for twenty-four hours.

5  Warm. Regiment on Picket. Another Battle at Malvern Hill. Hooker, Kearney, and Sickles engaged.
 
6  John Pollard return from Richmond.

8  Call for 600,000 more volunteers. Regiment on Picket.
 
9  Regiment came in.
 
10  Commenced paying off.
 
11  Finished paying us.
 
12  Cleaned up the camp.

14  Ordered to evacuate Harrison's Landing. Column commenced moving at 9 o'clock P.M.
 
15  Struck tents. Expect to move every hour.
 
16  Commenced our march to day marched ------ ----- City Court House and encamped for the night. ---- P.M.
 
17  Left at 7 a.m. Marched cross Chickohominy and encamped.
 
18  Marched 2 1/2 miles beyond Williamsburgh and encamped.
 
19  Left camp at 6 a.m. and arrived at and encamped in McClellan's intrenchments at Yorktown at about 2 o'clock P.M.
 
20  Very warm. Marched from Yorktown to Little Bethel a distance of 12 miles.
 
21  Left for New-Port News where we arrived at 1/2 past 12 M. Another 12 mile march.
 
22  Went on board Daniel Webster at 6 P.M. and dropped down James River and anchored until 12 midnight.
 
23  Arrived at Aquia Creek where we were ordered to Alexandria.
 
24  Arrived at Alexandria at 9 o'clock in the morning Landed at Dock no.2.
 
25  Encamped about 1 1/2 mile from Alexandria on Little River Pike.
 
26  Marching orders. Lt. Vedder and R.S. Vedder at Washington on business.
 
27  Lt. Vedder and Rodney returned from Washington.
 
28  Lt. Vedder on Provost duty near Alexandria.
 
29  Left camp and marched to Anondale at 4 o'clock ordered out on Picket.
 
30  Marched from Anondale to four miles beyond Centreville. Covered retreat from battlefield to Centreville. At night we were in the Fort.
 
31  The 32nd New York in the Fort held by us last night. 18th outside the fort in Line of Battle.
 
SEPTEMBER
 
1  Left Centreville at 10 o'clock P.M. for Fairfax Court House where we arrived at 5 o'clock the next morning.
 
2  Arrived to Alexandria where we arrived at 9. P.M. in our old camp. (Camp King) There was a Skirmish near Fairfax Court House when Genl. Kerney was killed.
 
3  ------- the Road and encamped in the Camp -------- held by the 31st N. York.
 
4  Our knapsacks arrived Lt. John Vedder Officer of the guard.
 
5  Big ----- came. Men detailed to clear up a good camp ground.
 
6  Tents pitched and everything comfortable when they order came to pack up and be ready to move immediately. Mached at -- P.M. - miles beyond Georgetown.
 
Left camp at about 7 miles beyond  Tinletown, Md.
 
8  Marched through Rockville, where we sent our knapsacks to Washington.
 
9  at 9 1/2 left camp and marched through Darnstown 2/3 miles from City of Washington.
 
10  Left camp and marched through the village of ----------
 
11  Take possession of Sugar Loaf Mountain. Rained in the afternoon.
 
12  at 8 A.M. we started again and passed through Barnsville and Urbanna. Marched until 4 o'clock in the afternooon and encamp on the East side of the Sugar Loaf.
 
13  Pass through Buckeye Station. Heavy firing on our Left. The enemy on the skedaddle.
 
14  Battle of Crampton Gap. Our brave captain (Wm Horsfall) was killed while leading his company up the hill on the charge. Five men of Company E wounded. The victory is ours. Slept on field
 
15  Remain on Battlefield. Capt Horsfall buried.
 
16  Heavy firing on the Right.
 
17  Leave Crampton Gap to reinforce the main army at Antietam. Arrive on the battle-field at about 1 o'clock where we covered the batteries.
 
18  Flag of Truce sent in by the Rebels to bury their dead. Some picket. firing at night.
 
19  The enemy commence to retreat early in the morning. go in pursuit at about 10 A.M. Capture one Regiment of Rebel Cavarly.
 
20  Camped near the Potomac. Heavy fighting with the Jackson's Rear guard.
 
21  Commence to move at 12 o'clock at night for Williamsport Pass through Sharpsburgh an over the late battlefield.
 
22  3 1/2 miles from Williamsport. on the Hagerstown turnpike. Genl. Couch engaged Jackson.
 
23  Fine. Off again headed towards Washington. Marched 6 miles.

16  Regiment was divided in the darkness and the left wing went into camp at about 6 o'clock in the morning. We could see the rebels on the other side of the River on the plains we had occupied only last night.
 
17  Moved camp about 1/2 a mile to rest of the Regiment.
