At Gaines Mill, this was one of the 18th first large scale battle. Gaines Mill was part of the Seven Days Battles. At Gaines Mill, the 18th NY was part of VI Corps (Franklin); 1st Division (Slocum); 3rd Brigade (Newton). Newton's brigade was a part of the reserve at this battle, deployed on the plateau above Boatswain's Swamp behind the Federal first line and with or in support of the Federal artillery. Newton appears to have been deployed almost directly behind the point of attack of Whiting's Confederate division (Hood's and Law's brigades) which succeeded in breaking the Federal lines and securing the victory for the Confederates. The 18th took minor casualities with 18th men dying on the field or wounded on the field and later died from that wound.
